down loaded demo having problems with the fader on a NS6

edited May 2014 in MixEmergency
Hi, just downloaded the demo for ME, I could not get the fader to work properley using
serato dj and a numark NS6. Tried midi mapping the fader and it jumps all over the place. system specs are: 15 in MBP, 16 GB ram, i7 quad core 2.3GHZ, integrated pro iris graphics, dedicated g force 750 video card with 2 GB ram, OSX 10.9.2. If we could fix problem I would definite purchase software. Thank you!

  • Hi djincali,

The best thing to do is to:

    1) Open the MIDI mapping panel for the crossfader and delete all the mappings
    2) Close the MIDI mapping panel for the crossfader
    3) Run Serato DJ

The fader should be automatic when Serato DJ is running - there's no need to map the fader at all.
  • Hi Nick,
Thanks for the respons, Just to be clear, I only tried to map the fader because it would not work
on it's own, I'll try what you advised and see what happens, and post the results. Thanks again!
  • Make sure that you're running the latest version of Serato DJ too - it won't work with pre-1.6 versions.

    Thank you Nick,
I was able to get it working with your help. I'll be testing it out, looks very impressive! Thanks again!
  • Cool :) Let me know if you have any other questions.
  • Hi Nick,
Unfortunately I'm still having an issue with the cross fader using the NS6. When I transition from one deck to the other, the transition effect doesn't always cut off when the fader is fully to one side. I could see on the screen the fader doesn't always go fully to the side the track was faded to, and the effect of the transition continues unless I move the fader to the opposite direction and slam it back. It happens most of the time, but not all the time. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!
  • What version of Serato DJ are you using?
  • Hi Nick,
    Running 1.6.2
  • Hmm, that's interesting - I'll look into it. For now though, you could go into the Preferences of MixEmergency, to the Transition section, and adjust the "Fader cut-in". Setting it to 5% may be enough.
  • Alright, I'll try that, Thanks!
  • please forgive my ignorance, but I have no clue on how to access the preferences area? Is there a tutorial video on how to navigate ME? Thanks again!
  • It's the same for almost every Mac OS application: go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, select the application name (in this case MixEmergency), and click "Preferences...". Alternatively, you can often push the keyboard short cut Command-, (the Command key and the Comma key).
  • Thanks Nick,
I forgot to mention that I'm new to Mac, I've been a PC user since I've started using computers,
and just this month purchased two brand new MBPs, so I'm still learning. I will try what you instructed, Thanks again!
  • Hey Nick,
I tried changing the settings for the fader cut in time to 5% like you instructed me, the transition effects still don't cut off always when a new track is mixed.
  • Bizarre. Perhaps we can get this MIDI mapped manually instead, and bypass whatever Serato DJ is sending. I'll have to look up the correctly MIDI codes for this controller - which I'm not able to do at the moment, as I'm not in the office.
  • No worries Nick,

    Whenever you have a chance.
    Thanks!
  • I haven't been able to find a document that lists the MIDI messages sent by the NS6. Perhaps you can start MixEmergency, open the MIDI window, enable MIDI logging, and move the crossfader from left to right (don't touch anything else). Then, copy and paste the MIDI log into this discussion.
  • Ok, when I get back home I will try that, thanks!

  • Ok, so in MixEmergency, disable the Preference "Use External Controller Crossfader". (you can also set the cut-in distance back to 0%)

Then, MIDI map your crossfader to that of MixEmergency. It should be jumping around like before. Next, on the MIDI mapping pop-up window, change the CC number to be 7 (instead of 39, which it has probably mapped it to). That should be it, it should work now.
  • Hi Nick,

It's still doing it, I did just how you explained. Do you think it might be the NS6 drivers, maverics drivers installed are beta, that's the only thing available right now for my computer.
  • That's bizarre. If you remove the MIDI mapping (with Serato DJ running), I assume that the crossfader stops moving? (just making sure the MIDI isn't being overridden)
  • edited May 2014
If I understand you correctly, the CF still keeps working.
  • If the crossfader is still moving when you unmap it, then there's something else going on.

Can you post a screenshot of the Transition section of MixEmergency's Preferences?
  • Ok, when I get home I will.

  • Ok - so the setting with the title "Use External Controller Crossfader" will need to be turned off.
  • Once that happens, and the MIDI mapping for the crossfader is deleted, the crossfader shouldn't move the crossfader in MixEmergency at all. Can you confirm that?
  • edited May 2014
Yes that's correct, the CF doesn't move after disabling it, I realized I didn't disable it how you stated, and went ahead and did everything all over again making sure this time it was disabled. When I mapped it to ME, the CC was already set to 7, and the problem continued, but I noticed something. If I move the CF from side to side very slowly it works fine. But if I move the CF normally, not very slowly how I usually would use it, the problem remains.
  • Can you turn on MIDI logging, move the crossfader quickly left or right - and when the problem occurs, stop, and post the last 10 or so lines form the MIDI log? (i.e. I'm just trying to figure out if MixEmergency is even receiving the correct MIDI messages, or whether it is a problem with the controller)

  • So, at the end of the first and second, it was to one side, but the fader in MixEmergency was open, correct? The values that are showing show that the fader should be closed to one side.
  • That's correct.
  • Hmm - I'm going to have a look through the code and see if I can see anything obvious. The way that MIDI is handled has changed a little for the next version (MixEmergency 2.6) - if I'm unable to find anything, perhaps I can get you to run a quick test with the latest version.

Ok Nick, thanks again! I appriciate your help.
  • I can't see anything - and I'm not able to reproduce this.

How often does it occur when you're moving the crossfader quickly?

Could you perhaps post a screenshot of your MixEmergency MIDI window - both the pop-up assignment window, the MIDI window, and 2 of the MIDI window with the inputs and outputs drop-down menu open.
  • It happenes most the time, I'll post when I get home.
  • Can I also get you to try one more thing... Can you see if this is occurring when using Serato Video too?
  • I don't use serato video but I guess I could run the demo. I can confirm that I have no issues with virtual DJ if that helps. Haven't had a chance to post what you requested, been working late, will do so later on for sure.

  • Hi Nick,
I'm not sure this is what you asked for, on a different note, I did run serato video in demo mode and the fader worked perfectly.
  • Everything looks fine... I'm going to have to have a think about this... I can't understand why this would be happening.
  • No problem Nick, There's no rush.
  • I don't have an NS6 with me to test with at the moment, but I'm going to get someone else to see if he can reproduce this.
  • Sounds good, thanks!
  • ive read thoroughly through the comments, this always happens to me and it baffles me the NS6 crossfader with ME isn't in full sync.
  • What version of Serato DJ are you using? Do you have it MIDI mapped, or are you using the default mapping that occurs?
  • Hi Nick, Just wondering have you been able to find anything out on this issue?
    Thanks.
  • No, not yet. I've had another user do some testing with the NS6, and he hasn't been able to reproduce it. MixEmergency 2.6 will be out very soon, and I'm hoping that the changed to the MIDI in this version may fix the issue. If not, we'll have to look into it even further after the release.
  • hi nick i'm using the default mapping.
  • @djkakip can you go into MixEmergency's Preferences, to the Transition section, and make sure that "Use External Controller Crossfader" is disabled. When Serato DJ is running, the crossfader in MixEmergency shouldn't move any more when you move the fader on the NS6. Then, go into MIDI mapping mode (using MixEmergency 2.6), and map the crossfader of your NS6 to MixEmergency's crossfader. Is the issue still present?
  • thanks will try and get back to you.
  • can you try to to set the contour in serato video to standard? it might be that a false setting in serato video causes trouble for you in mix emergency.
it has to be enabled and not contoured i think
