Midi Control

edited September 2008 in MixEmergency
First off congratulations and best of luck with your software. Just wondering, If i use your software with serato can i select midi control within serato and in turn use the denon HC-4500 controller or do i have to map it through your software ?

    Thanks.

I'm not too sure that I understand your question though.

To use MIDI with MixEmergency you need to map each MIDI control on your hardware to a control on the interface of MixEmergency. You can also use your MIDI control to control Scratch LIVE.

Certain actions performed in Scratch LIVE will also cause the same actions in MixEmergency. For example, loading a video in Scratch LIVE will also cause the same video to be loaded in MixEmergency.

In serato 1.8.1 i we have the option of running the software in internal mode, when run in internal mode with a denon hc-4500 plugged into the laptop it basically takes control of
serato. What i am wondering is if your software operates as a sort of add on to serato and with all of seratos plug ins or only uses the sl-1 box and run's independent of it.

Hope that was a little clearer, it's hard to put what my question into text.
    Thanks, Alex.

Our software acts as a "plug-in" to Scratch LIVE, however we have only tested the MixEmergency Public Beta using Scratch LIVE with the TTM 57SL and the SL 1.

i am confused, i thought the concept of this was to be able to use with a controller eliminating the need for the ttm 57sl why are you testing it with the 57sl, and if i purchase this what controllers can i use with this? i was thinking about the vestax 100 or new 300.
  • edited 11:17PM
Those are my sentiments exactly. But from the looks of it, the software might work. It sounds like everything plays via serato which in turn we control with ( In my case denon 4500 )
mix emergency acts as a plug in controlled by serato. The only way to find out is by trying it. I'll down load it and try next week with the sl 1

@jon The Rane TTM 57SL is a great piece of hardware. It is a simple solution for those wishing to mix and manipulate videos, as it reduces the number of devices you need to connect to your computer.

djphenominal, I think you are on the right track there. MixEmergency is a "plug-in" controlled by Scratch LIVE. Scratch LIVE requires either a Rane TTM 57SL, MP 4 or SL 1 to run and output sound. The way in which you control Scratch LIVE (vinyl/cd/etc) is not important to MixEmergency.

So, if you have a controller that can control Scratch LIVE, and you have the required Rane hardware connected, then you should also be able to control MixEmergency.

@ Nick - While reading the manual for mix emergency i saw that it requires the video sl plug-in. Is this the plug-in that i can download from their website or are we talking the one that has to be purchased ? From what i have been told the download of the video sl plug in displays a water mark on the video output, i am guessing mix emergency only uses the plug-in to run but not to output the video which in turn if i purchase mix emergency it will not display any watermark. Am i right ?

    Thanks, Alex.
  • edited 11:17PM
You only need the Video-SL plug-in to be enabled (i.e. it doesn't need to run) if you want to import video into your Scratch LIVE library. This can be the demo version from Serato's website (you do not need to purchase the full version). This is a requirement of Scratch LIVE. MixEmergency does not require the Video-SL plug-in to be installed to run or act as a plug-in for Scratch LIVE.

I believe you could also import videos into Scratch LIVE using Scratch Tools (though I am not sure of this as I have not tried this myself).

I am a little newer than you im sure ,but i do a lot of research so i am sure i can help with info to. Thanks

I'll definitely keep you posted, i would wait B4 u go buying PCDJ VJ though. I use Virtual dj ( or at least i try ) which is actually what pcdj vj is derived from and as of now i can not play for more than 45 minutes with out the program just shutting down. It doesn't even give me a error message, it just stops playing and instantly disappears. It works good on pc but for mac it leaves a lot to be desired. Let me get past this weekend and i will let you know how this works for me.

    Hey Guys,
I think I might have stumbled on the perfect Mixer to use with Serato Sl 1 and Mix Emergency,ECLER NUO 4, this mixer has a midi controller , so I am thinking you can actually map it on both SL 1.8 and MixEmergency.

I am still doing some research on this, because am actually thinking of buying the mixer.
Otherwise I will keep guys posted.

    hel me nick
i can not find the (option-clik the on screen control) were is , because i want make connection midi for the crossfader work mix video
more detailed explanation step by step o pictures, i have de mixer djm 800

    Hi djalexs,

To assign a MIDI control to the crossfader (or most other controls in MixEmergency) you need to hold down the option key (also know as the "alt" key) on your keyboard while you left-click the crossfader in MixEmergency.

Doing so will briefly open a window that displays three dashes (like this: "- - -"), and a cross button (for removing the MIDI assignment). When this window opens you need to move the crossfader on your DJM 800. This will cause the three dashes to change (it will change to a number), and the crossfader of your mixer will be assigned to the crossfader in MixEmergency.

I have had a few reports that the DJM 800 is not working correctly with the current MixEmergency Public Beta. We will have a new Public Beta version out within the next two weeks that should fix this issue.

Let us know how you get on, or if you need more help.

    Hello Guys,
I got the Ecler NUO 4, and the Midi works fine, it has about 72 Midi notes to assign to but you have to use like 5 different layouts to use them, so its quite hard to assign the Midi consistently(both for Serato and ME)
A few negative attributes to Midi assignment on ME is on the effects parameters controls(internal, position, velocity) you have to assign different midi for each control. I also wish you could preview any effect applied before projecting it to the main output.
Otherwise I still like the plugin and can't wait to purchase it, although it would have been nice to demo in full screen
    Cheers

NICK remains the same problem in the new vercion beta 2 with Pioneer JDM 800
  • edited 11:17PM
That's strange - we've several reports that the new version is working the the Pioneer DJM 800. Can you give us some more information about how you are connecting your mixer to your computer?

Are you able to see the black MIDI assignment box with the three dashes (i.e. "- - -" )?

Hey Nick. I just purchased the software and pretty much I'm happy with it. I bought M-Audio MIDI and can't get it to work smoothly the way it should with the cross fader. I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz intel Core 2 Duo and 4 gb of ram. I'm trying to link up the cross fader with my DJM-800. Any suggestions or recommendations on what MIDI I should buy? Thanks for a great Plug-in.
  • edited 11:17PM
Okay, are you able to link the crossfader at all? Or are you just having issues with the tracking of the MIDI fader (i.e. the crossfade isn't smooth for you)?

There is a basic MIDI connection tutorial for MixEmergency here: http://www.vimeo.com/2252372
  • edited 11:17PM
By the way, apologies in advance if my responses are a little slow for the next few days - we're shifting office.
  • edited 11:17PM
Thanks for the response. I did exactly what the tutorial showed. I'm able to link it to the cross fader, but it does not run smooth at all. I have to keep going back in forth on the croos fader to get the video to move over to the other side. I'm not sure if it's the MIDI product that I bought that is not allowing it to run the way it should, or something to do with the settings in the software. Thanks for your help
  • edited 11:17PM
    That's strange.

Can you do a test for me?

    1. Can you start MixEmergency and connect your MIDI device/mixer as you normally would.
    2. Open the MIDI Window (you can access this from the menu bar).
    3. Move the crossfader to the furthest right position.
    4. Enable MIDI logging in the MIDI window.
    5. Move the crossfader to the furthest left position (if possible, take around 2 seconds to move it).
    6. Disable MIDI logging.
    7. Copy and paste the output produced in the MIDI logging window into this discussion.

Hopefully we can sort this issue out for you quickly.

Thanks. The output isn't quite what we would be expecting. The mixer should be able to output MIDI Control Change messages (they start with 0xB0 - 0xBF).

I've got a few beta testers who are using the DJM 800, so I've e-mailed them to see how they have set up their mixers. I'll let you know what I find out.

When you option-click on the crossfader in MixEmergency, what number does it show in the MIDI assignment window that pops up?
  • edited 11:17PM
I've looked at the manual for the DJM 800, and it specifies that the crossfader should be sending MIDI Control Change messages - so the above output is very strange.
  • edited 11:17PM
2 and 32 will appear when I go back in forth on the crossfader. MixEmergency will read it, but I have to keep going back and forth and order for it to cross over, and it will sit in the middle. It seems like a weak signal or something? Any suggestions?
  • edited 11:17PM
So it changes between the two numbers while you're trying to assign it? If so, that is very strange and definitely won't work correctly.

It's hard to say where the problem might be. What is the exact model number of the MIDI device that you purchased?

Can you try downloading this application: http://snoize.textdriven.com/MIDIMonitor/ and check exactly what MIDI messages are being sent when you move the crossfader? I would be interested to see the output.

Also, can you check that you've connected the MIDI Out of your mixer to the MIDI In of your MIDI interface correctly.
  • edited 11:17PM
Down loaded the software and down below is the output message. I do have MIDI out connected to the back of my pioneer mixer, the usb connected to my Mac, the only wire that is not connected is the MIDI IN. The MIDI interface box has the MIDI IN light solid green and the USB light glows low and high at a a steady peace.

Shouldn't you have it connected like this:

Mixer MIDI Out -> MIDI Interface MIDI In -> USB Hub -> Computer
  • edited 11:17PM
That's how I have it. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, But hope I can figure this out soon. It does read it and pick it up. Their is just a big Lag.
  • I'm confused here...set me straight.

Don't you set-up midi controls for Serato INSIDE Serato? I know that for the DJM-800 I don't have to do anything but select the control I want to control from my mixer while inside the midi set-up inside Serato.

    What am I missing here?

djray0981 is having trouble with the MIDI control of MixEmergency, not Scratch Live.

Was there a solution found to this after all ? I just received my djm 800 and am using a m audio midi sport interface, when i option click on the fader in ME i get a box with a 0 in it. I know the software is getting a midi signal because i enabled midi logging, the following is the report i got

I believe the problem he was having was the USB MIDI interface (I haven't confirmed it, but saw that on another forum he posted that he is using MixEmergency with another MIDI interface).

Can you try this app: http://snoize.textdriven.com/MIDIMonitor/ and see what output it gives when moving just the crossfader on the mixer?

    Here you go, Thanks.
PS : This is only from one side to the other on the fader. If i do a full pass from side to side the forum would not let me post the midi file, it is too big, over 4000 characters.

I can see from this that the MIDI interface isn't correctly sending MIDI Control Change messages (which the DJM 800 is supposed to transmit when the fader is moved). I think you have the same problem as djray0981. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do in the MixEmergency software to fix this problem. I recommend reporting the problem in the m-audio support forums to see if they have a work-around (it may be something simple, for example, I have an m-audio MIDI keyboard that won't work properly on my computer unless I run it through a USB hub) and then possibly buying a different MIDI interface (make sure you can test it first, or know of someone that is also able to use it with their Mac).
  • edited 11:17PM
Also, if you report the problem to m-audio, can you let us know how you get on?
  • edited 11:17PM
Anyone that is using the pioneer djm 800 out there that can tell me what midi to usb device they are using ?
The device i have has a easy return policy that i want to use and simply get another one from another manufacturer.
  • edited 11:17PM
I believe djray0981 is using the Roland EDIROL UM-1EX.
  • edited 11:17PM
I figured as much. I went to the m audio forums and found nothing but negative comments about the unit i bought. Seems like they have been putting out defective units for the last year. I'll go with the edirol.
    Thanks for the help.
  • edited 11:17PM
    http://www.jr.com/edirol-by-roland/pe/ROE_UM3EX/

Will this device work ? It is the smallest one i could find in my area, I hate shopping on line and can drop into this store at any time.
  • edited 11:17PM
Yeah - it should work (though the m-audio one should work on a Mac also). The good thing about the Roland UM-3EX would be that the MIDI cables aren't attached to the interface - so if you damage your MIDI cable it is easily replaceable.
  • edited 11:17PM
So, i called another branch of the retail store where i bought the m audio interface and got someone on the phone that knew exactly what i was talking about. He explained that m audio ran into some trouble with this unit but had narrowed the defective units down to a batch from a specific plant. He said they recalled all of them and was sorry but apparently i got one of the older units. I went in and exchanged it, Just got home, tried it and it works like a charm. Thanks for all the help. Time to play.

    Thanks again, Alex.
  • edited 11:17PM
Awesome. I hope there aren't too many more of the defective batch floating around though.

Hey Djray0981how did you go with your Midi Set-up,
Please Pm i have question i need to ask about videos,
    Cheers.

    Here's something very interesting !!!!!

You can use your iphone as a WIRELESS midi controller to control any of Serato's or ME's controls.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD5WsQnUafc

    Cool eh ?

It may be crude to actually dj from your iphone, but i think this could be a nice toy for triggering samples etc, and means if you have an iphone you dont have to buy a midi controller and its WIRELESS !

This opens up many possibiliteis, i havn't tested it properly but it has a range of at least 15 feet, so u could dj from a distance from your decks (if u wanted to) like if u needed the toilet, switch into int mode and assign midi to play button, off we go ...... Or you could dj from the dance floor....

    You get the idea

Damn this technology is killing me :-)
